Festival of Stuff: Afternoon - Experimental Indigo Dyeing Masterclass

This experimental dyeing masterclass will teach participants how to dip fabric into an indigo dye vat without aerating it, and investigate the invisible histories of natural indigo as a material that is closely linked to both slavery and cultural expression. Once Samantha has helped everyone to mastered the art of the dip, the group will trial and test different folding, clamping and stitching methods to create an abundance of different patterns and techniques. While making, Sam will continue conversations with the group about her research into the cultural history of materials and making and indigo's presence in the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. 

Samantha Russell of Tens Studio is an artist and natural dyer currently studying a Masters in Global Black Studies, Decolonisation and Social Justice. As part of her creative practice she explores black history through hand crafts and natural dyeing and enjoys passing on this knowledge to others. 

This masterclass is suitable for ages 18+, aside from that, no experience or skill necessary, all welcome!

Important information about our ticket ballot for this event:

• We are using a ballot system for ticket booking for our Festival of Stuff masterclasses.
• Entering the ballot means that you've entered into a draw for the opportunity to book a ticket to a masterclass. From Tuesday 9th May onwards, successful entrants will be sent a booking link, which must be completed within 24 hours to secure a ticket.
• Unfortunately, the ballot may be oversubscribed, so entering it doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be offered tickets.
• The ballot is open for a limited time: from 5:00am on Friday 5th May until 23:59pm on Monday 8th May.
• Once tickets are fully booked, we will notify everyone and offer the opportunity to join the waiting list.
