In this hands-on master class participants will get the chance to work the creative geniuses from Silo Studio - an East London practice that explores industrial processes and materials. By adopting a hands-on approach, which they refer to as ‘Handmade hi-tech’, Silo Studio aim to discover possibilities that the production line does not see, developing the expressive potential in industrial materials. The result: an exciting mix of craft and technology!
In the workshop you will explore and experiment with using EPS, an industrial material normally use for packaging and insulation. In this case we will form it using textile moulds and steam. The aim of the masterclass is to create handmade bespoke objects to take home.
You will spend an hour designing your objects, using a sewing machine to create your textile moulds and choosing a combination of different EPS to fill the mould with. Following this your mould will be boiled for an hour during which you can look around the Materials Library and go for a cafe break, after which participants will return to undo their moulds and unearth their polystyrene creations!
