Members event, drop in, doors open at 5.45pm

Our new informal research event series for members. Each evening will feature a UCL Researcher and how they navigate the Makespace to develop their academic work. This month features Stephen Long, PhD Student at the London NERC Doctoral Training Partnership, who will talk about producing low-cost video rigs in the Makespace to help his study of sustainable fishing in Greenland, and the impact of deep-sea trawling on benthic ecosystems.

Stephen says; "The deep-sea is the earth’s last unexplored frontier, an ecosystem beyond the reach of sunlight, which we know very little about.  Despite this lack of knowledge, the past few decades have seen commercial fishing expand into the depths chasing dwindling fish stocks. This project employs low-cost video rigs, with a little help from the Institute of Making, to gain new insights into the deep-sea ecosystems of the Arctic and quantify the impact of trawling."
