The Institute of Making conducts and supports multidisciplinary research on the topic of materials, materiality and the made world. As well as having our own in-house team of researchers, we also offer the wider research community a place to engage, investigate and explore matter and processes of making through events, workshops and collaborative projects.

My Research Makespace: Pancake Making for Glaucoma Surgery

This month Dr. Yann Bouremel will be explaining the relationship between glaucoma surgery and cooking pancakes in honour of Pancake Day! Yann used the Materials Library to learn more on material properties for his research and now regularly uses its facilities.

My Research Makespace: Laser-scanning for PHX [X is for Xylonite]

At our event, Frances Scott, an artist working with moving image, will screen her new film work PHX [X is for Xylonite]. Frances worked at Institute of Making over a number of weeks to produce specialist laser scans, which would become animated forms in the final film. Following the screening, she will discuss how she made use of the Institute of Making to further her research through making.

Member Masterclass: Recycling Roman Ruins

Join archaeologist Beth Munro, glassworker Shelley James and metalsmith Necole Schmitz to explore how ancient craftspeople transformed Roman glass mosaics and metal pipes, then mimic these methods to make your own creations! This event will highlight recent archaeological research on Roman villa recycling and investigate the properties of ancient materials through exciting hands-on making.

My Research Makespace: Building for Virtual Reality

She is currently working on her PhD research within the Created Out of Mind Hub residency at the Wellcome Collection, which aims to challenge perceptions of dementia through scientific and creative experimentation.
